I am ten.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
My dad's having a bbq party for grad students/faculty in his department (right now) and I kind of just want to take my food and a drinkie and hide in the TV room downstairs all by myself. Is that wrong?

In other news, my students write their exam tomorrow night and I have this one Ultra Nervous Woman emailing me daily asking where she can find [insert course material here], who needs to be told that she can actually go look for things in the library catalogue. Sigh. For real people, when did students start needing to be told to use the library?

I see that August is half over. ::headdesk::

1. I am at a point where I could kind of almost maybe see myself watching the Bones finale again. I think I need to. I still can't forgive their crappy rushed writing that turned Zack's character into a casualty, but I still love the cast. Especially ED and TJT. I don't know if I'll be able to have fun with the Booth/Brennan stuff in the next season, though, it's just so much more obvious now that it's all the showrunners care about. Le sigh.

2. Found out yesterday (after emailing people) that the deadline for course reader copying/textbook ordering for fall courses had already passed and NO ONE told me. Thanks, awesome university organization. Today will be spent running around photocopying.

3. A friend of mine practically ambushed me yesterday and told me to sign up for Lavalife, and when I said (repeatedly) that I would think about it she yelled at me that I think too much. Message received and all, but srsly don't order me around about my own personal life. If dating was that easy for me don't you think I'd be doing it all the time? I think she's the one who wants to go on Lavalife but can't because she's already taken.

4. Sigh. It's August. Where has the summer gone?

Never go North on Bayview

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So despite the fact that I slogged through a 40 minute (4 x '10 and 1') run yesterday, I thought hey I'd go for a quick 20 minute one this morning after breakfast since I had a bit of energy.

Yeah, I'm here in Toronto cat-sitting and got totally lost in where I thought I was going. I had to keep on running north thinking I'd eventually get to turn west like I needed to, and kept going...I was gone for over an HOUR. Lots of walking, not just running, but still. OMG.

And then I came back all sweaty and bent down to tie my shoes and one of the cats rubbed himself all over me. Yay.

I can't believe it's noon already. I gotta get this day started...

My thots, let me shew you them...

So you think you can dance )

Other than that, my TV life is pretty humdrum these days. I watch Restaurant Makeover and Holmes on Homes (OMG Mike Homes, plz to be saving the world now), and keep meaning to check out this new drama Flashpoint except they went and put it in the timeslot of death, Fridays at 10pm. Le sigh. It'd be great to see real live Toronto on screen though.

Annnnnd....that's all she wrote. Nighty nite.

Me

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
On July 30th I will be turning 30.

I will also be turning 30 while living with my parents and still trying to find a full time job.

I need somebody to help me feel not pathetic about this.

And that's how we do character assassination.

Seriously. WTF, Bones, WTF.

I only watched intermittent bits of the ep while recording it, and I'm not even sure I want to watch the whole thing.
Way to suck ass, show.

I'll watch until Booth and Brennan have all the sex, and then I might be done. This show is making breaking up with it really, really easy.

Dude, I enjoyed last night's Bones ep enough to post about it! Maybe I'll even do the photo recap once I've stopped being a ball of stress.

The Wannabe in the Weeds )

And now if you'll excuse me I have to go spend the next 2 days being a ball of stress and trying to prepare for my thesis defense which will hopefully go fine and not leave me in a pile of tears of inadequacy.

Lalalalalalaaaa....

I haven't forgotten this fic, I swear. also swear that I didn't intend for two months to go by without posting on this fic. It's been a pretty stressful couple of months for me (in RL turmoil known as "finishing the PhD" - just about done that though not quite), and I've had all kinds of psychological timesucks. I've had so little left to finish on this fic and I'm happy to get back to it.

Thank you all for your patience, and especially if you are still reading. It has been a pleasure to write and I hope it has been enjoyable to read.

For any fans of BSG and/or CanLit, it may interest you to know that Michael Hogan is reading the Canada-Reads-winning book 'King Leary', and that all the installments are available on podcast.

Hope y'all are doing well - not much news to report here. Back from my Boston trip, working up the effort to do some actual work.

The day has arrived

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
It is today. The day when I finally get off my ass and write my conference paper Bones returns to television screens.

I've been so tired and stressed the last few weeks I've almost forgotten what it's like to be excited about television again! Oh, merciful heavens.

So if I recall the steps correctly, first I get very very hopeful and squeeful, then I dumb down all my expectations so as not to be entirely disappointed. Then I talk back to the screen as i watch. Did I miss anything? ;)

Enjoy if you're watching...But if you're not, I'm off to Boston tomorrow anyhoo so I'll avoid the post-ep spoilers!

Life on a monday

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
1. I don't want to work on my revisions, but what else is new? ::opens files::

2. The only thing standing between me and a finished 'Intimate Intention' posting is a pair of half-finished chapters. I gotta get on that.

3. I've decided that after my final defense in May, I'm having a party with my knitting friends. Gonna get together in the T-Dot with some food and yarn and it'll be awesome-cakes.

4. I am finally ready to admit that I am done with winter. I want to be able to go running again. I want to not have to think about how many layers of clothing to put on me and my extremities before going outside. I don't want summer, I just want there to not be snow anymore. Please weather, help a Canadian girl out?

Thursday Thursday Thursday

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
1. I'm possibly the last person online to watch |Jimmy Kimmel is Fucking Ben Affleck|, but damn, that was funny. The Josh Groban parts were the best.

2. This week I finished 'Alice in Wonderland' (lovely), and am now having a look at 'French Women Don't Get Fat'. I picked it up on sale last week out of curiosity and am still not quite sure what to think of it after about 100 pages. On the one hand, I think the advice is generally good (i.e. drink lots of water, keep healthy snacks, reduce fatty foods and sugar), and does addresses the fact that healthy eating is about lifestyle and not diets. But on the other hand, it's a completely anecdotal book. I keep wondering if it should really be titled "French Women with Income and No Children and Access to Fresh Markets and an Inspirational Doctor Don't Get Fat." I could do with fewer sweeping generalizations about "the French" and "Americans" if there was say, one fricking set of statistics comparing the health, wellness, and obesity of both populations.

3. Today the local papers have cover stories on the woman who slept with Governor Spitzer. Talk about getting fucked. That dude spent HOW many thousands of dollars on prostitutes and this woman is still struggling to pay rent? Spitzer will be fine. He's got his 5th Avenue apartment, his wife and children will probably stay with him, meanwhile nobody will stop to ask the questions about why women get driven to prostitution in the first place. (I have that West Wing ep in my head with Donna asking Josh whether he thinks little girls wish they could grow up to be hookers.)

4. Revisions. Revisions revisions revisions, oh how I loathe thee.

1. There's someone who has been on my friends-list who is quite frankly immature, full of herself, and I am pretty sure has never encountered anyone who didn't fangirl her immediately. Yesterday I finally commented critically on one of her posts, got told that I should maybe de-friend her, did so, and then got called a bitch. FUN times! Oh, my heart is broken let me tell you. I'm also 100% sure her future posts will contain entries wherein I figure as an 'OMG u r so meeeeen' figure and her fangirls cling to her, I'm sad I'll miss that. Hi, honey, this is the difference a decade of life will get you. Call me in another 10 years.

2. My wireless internet has now become spotty at best and the only way of dealing with it is to move the computer or move the router. Neither of these options are particularly appealing.

In other news...nothing. How are y'all?

Update

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
1. Did not get job in New Brunswick. Thanks for waiting so fucking long to finally tell me, NB people. BOO.

2. Am going to buy yarn this afternoon from a shop that is closing, and the fact that it is closing is the saddest saddest thing ever. It is so diversely stocked and friendly and it needed to stay around but now it won't be there any more.

3. We got 25cm more snow yesterday. The past snowfalls have not melted. This will be fun.

4. I can't believe it's March 9th already.

Because we haven't had enough snow

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
From Environment Canada this afternoon:

A winter storm is currently brewing over Texas with the potential to bring significant snow to most of southern Ontario. It appears that the snow will come in two doses. The first shot will begin as early as Friday afternoon for southwestern Ontario and Friday evening in eastern Ontario. We may have a brief reprieve overnight into Saturday morning where snow may become light and more intermittent. The heaviest snowfall is then expected in the second shot beginning later Saturday. Keep in mind that this storm is expected to last for 36 to 48 hours.

So looks like minimum 15-20cm of accumulation for us this weekend. And we already got 10cm on Tuesday/Wednesday, and the rest of the stuff that got here in February hasn't really melted.

I think that means: check, check, for the hunkering down and knitting!
Um. Maybe I'll get on that train back to Hamilton sooner rather than later...

Vinyl Cafe

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I've started to look around for new podcasts lately and I remembered that the CBC radio now puts recent podcasts up for download. I listened to a few from Vinyl Cafe Stories on my way in today for teaching, and there was one that I just had to upload and share.

Vinyl Cafe "Favourites" Episode
Sendspace Link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/d2oc8o

This particular podcast is about 50 minutes long, contains 4 segments, and is seriously and surprisingly charming, poignant, and brilliant. It doesn't any of the fictional stories that Stuart McLean is probably most well known for (and are easily purchased) - anyone know the 'Dave cooks the turkey' story?), but is seriously one fantastic hour of listening. I was totally riveted.

I love you Stuart McLean! Call me!

March?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
1. So, I'm back at my parents' place now as of last night, which means no more Beatrice the Cat. (Me = sad face). We had a nice hour or two of sitting time before the house folks returned, wherein I knitted and watched the TV coverage of the Westminster dog show (BTW, dog shows are made of win. I need to watch Best in Show again asap) and Beatrice stretched all out on my lap and mashed her face into my knees. Good times.

2. But I will be consoled by the fact that I am temporarily rent-free. I don't think I've ever been rent-free since high school.

3. I'm reading Alice in Wonderland. It's lovely.

4. Today is a wacko high of +8 C, then tomorrow it dips down below freezing again. I don't mind the sun but I actually would be fine with a bit more sweater weather so I'm OK with the chill for a bit longer. This is the time of year when my knitting pays off.

Off to do a rew more 'productive' things now...
